Asakusa Toro Nagashi Lantern Floating

6:45pm – 8:00pm
Free

An evening event in which candle-lit lanterns are floated down the Sumida River.

What happens?

Toro nagashi is a tradition in which lanterns illuminated with candles are set afloat on rivers to guide the spirits of the ancestors back to the other side during the Obon holiday.

2,500 lanterns with hand written messages are glided down a slope into the waters on the east side of the Sumida River (the Asakusa Station side – not the Skytree side) between Azuma-bashi bridge and Kototoi-bashi bridge.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
