Quick comparison of transport options from Narita Airport to Shinjuku

It’s about 60 km from Narita Airport to Roppongi. Our top recommendation for making the trip is the Keisei Skyliner. It’s one of the faster options, only requires one transfer, and you can buy tickets online. However, if you’re traveling with a lot a luggage or in a group, a pre-booked private taxi might be a viable option.

If you want to get to Roppongi as quickly as possible, simply take the Keisei Skyliner train from Narita Airport (either of the airport terminal stations) to Keisei-Ueno Station. Then change to the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, which will take you to Roppongi Station. The total travel time is around 70 minutes plus transfers, and it costs ¥2,780 one way. You can buy a discounted Skyliner ticket online in advance for ¥2,300. You’d still have to buy a separate subway ticket for ¥210 so the total journey would then cost ¥2,510.

Another option is to buy a Skyliner and subway combo ticket. Prices start at ¥2,890 for a one-way Skyliner ticket and 24-hour subway pass. This would cover the entire trip from Narita to Roppongi, plus some extra subway travel. It’s not a bad deal if you say arrive in the morning, drop your luggage at your hotel in Roppongi, and then spend the rest of the day exploring Tokyo via subway. Places like Shinjuku, Tsukiji Fish Market, and Akihabara can all be reached via subway from Roppongi without making transfers.

Pro tip: If you’re staying at the Candeo Hotel Roppongi, it’s just a couple minutes’ walk from Exit 3 of Roppongi Station. The Roppongi Hills shopping and entertainment complex is also a short walk from Roppongi Station — simply follow the signs after getting off the train.

Keisei Main Line: The cheapest option

¥1,260
2 hours plus transfers

Brave, adventurous sorts might want to take the Keisei Main Line train (heading for Keisei-Ueno) from the airport. It follows more or less the same route as the Skyliner, but is slower and has more stops. However, it is also the absolute cheapest option coming in at ¥1,260. To get to Roppongi you’ll have to make transfer at Keisei-Ueno Station to the Hibiya Line. Keep in mind that this route has no luggage storage area or reserved seats.

Private Pre-booked Taxi: The easiest option

About ¥20,000 per car (for three passengers)
Approximately 70 minutes depending on traffic

For families and groups, a private pre-booked taxi can be a good option. They can be booked online in advance and prices start at about ¥20,000. These services are handy because they will drop you off directly at your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about navigating transfers with heavy luggage.

Regular Taxi: An expensive but convenient option

Approximately ¥30,000
2 hours and 40 minutes

If none of the above options appeal to you, you can always go for a regular taxi. However, this is a very expensive option. For non-toll roads you’re looking at about ¥30,000, and 2 hours and 40 minutes travel time. Alternatively, you could take toll roads which cost more (¥32,600) but takes 70 minutes. Keep in mind that taxi drivers may not speak English, so have the address of your destination ready in Japanese to help with communication.

Can I take the Narita Express from Narita Airport to Roppongi?

Yes, you can take the Narita Express (N’EX) to Roppongi. However we don’t recommend it as option because it’s only 5 minutes faster than the Skyliner but costs more (¥3,050). It also involves two transfers which would almost certainly cancel out any time you might ‘save.’

Can I use my JR Pass to get to Roppongi?

You could use a JR Pass for part of the journey to Roppongi. However, Roppongi Station is not served by any JR Lines, so you’d still have to pay for at least some parts of the trip. But we wouldn’t recommend it anyway, as the JR Pass is better suited for long-distance Shinkansen journeys.

While we do our best to ensure it’s correct, information is subject to change. Last updated in July 2023 by Maria Danuco.
