A solo exhibition by VIKI, "Narrative Fragments: a different you, me, and the world" will be held at Gallery Jiyugaoka. VIKI is an active young artist based in Japan, and a member of the Department of Intermedia Art at Tokyo University of the Arts. VIKI is devoted to creating artworks within the themes of "time, consumption, and beyond"—which focuses on connections between oneself and others in an information-affluent society as well as "individuality" in the flowing passage of time. "Silence in the beginning"—the main theme of this exhibition—is a silk-screen work made of shop receipts, which exist as records and memories of the Heisei era. The work was inspired by Viki's own experience of not able to grasp what had really changed when the era became Reiwa. In the Heisei era, with the advent of the internet, society was flooded with information. In the artist's eyes, individuality faded and reality was constantly changing. The work explores the real from the fake—and in the Reiwa era, pieces of Heisei help us ponder "individuality." While the exhibition is open from 1 pm—7 pm, please note that on the final day it will close at 5 pm. Opening reception: Saturday, March 14, 2020 from 4 pm to 6 pm.
