The winter edition of the Akōgishisai — a festival commemorating the 47 rōnin (or masterless samurai) — happens at Sengakuji Temple, the very same place to which the 47 loyal samurai took their enemy’s severed head and which holds their graves.
What happens?
Don’t expect any colourful re-enactments, this is a serious religious event with a graveside ceremony starting at 11 a.m. and then a ritual tea ceremony and a memorial service taking place at the main hall from noon.
