Torigoe Shrine Tondoyaki Bonfire

1:00pm – 2:30pm
Free

Bring your used New Year’s decorations to Torigoe Shrine for Tondoyaki, a ceremonial burning, or watch others do so. It is said that if the smoke blows over you, you’ll have a year’s good health.

What happens?

Many locals go to the temple on the morning of the 8th to pile up their old decorations, shimenawa rope, and hamaya arrows. On the day, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. there will be a massive bonfire to burn them. A ritual will be performed and children will bang on drums while shouting, “Tondo! Tondo!”.

Onlookers can then roast mochi in the fire.

Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
