Hanazono Shrine is the most important Shinto shrine in the vicinity of Shinjuku Station.
The shrine is located adjacent to the rabbit warren of Golden Gai. The shrine doesn’t have extensive grounds either — all the approaches are narrow and lined with tall buildings.
The most interesting time to visit is during the Tori no Ichi markets in November. Companies and individuals purchase “kumade” rakes, which bring good commercial luck for the next year.
On most Sundays, there is an antiques market at the shrine.
